A pair of cards earn weekly honors

STANFORD, Calif. — Stanford Juniors Joy Yun and Donghwan Park were named female and male fencers of the week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation on Tuesday for their performances at the Western Invitational at the Air Force Academy over the weekend.

Yun, a 2021 All-American, was 18-3 in saber for an .857 winning percentage in women’s competition. Park went 16-8 in saber for a .667 save percentage for the Cardinal men.

Yun went 2-1 against Harvard and 3-0 against Columbia, Ohio State and Northwestern, while beating 2021 NCAA finalist Northwestern. Yun beat the Columbia and Ohio State All-Americans. His only loss in 12 fights on Day 1 was a tight 5-4 result against NCAA champion Harvard.

Yun was also the Conference Fencer of the Week after last year’s Western Invitational, and is now a two-time weekly award winner.

Park, a two-time All-American, has had at least one win over all eight opponents, including five wins in total over Harvard, Columbia and Ohio State, all tied for first place in the competition. Park also went 6-3 against fellow MPSF Air Force opponents Incarnate Word and UC San Diego. This is Park’s first MPSF Athlete of the Week award.
