After an official visit to BYU this weekend, Charles “Chika” Ebunoha announced on Instagram that he had signed up with the Cougars. Ebunoha is an all-around athlete from Tuscon, Arizona. He played both sides of football for Marana High School last season, but BYU signed him as a defensive back.
Ebunoha tells Daily Cougs that he will join the program as a favorite walk-on with the possibility of winning a scholarship.
Ebunoha was described by one of his high school coaches as “one of the most athletic people you will ever meet”. Apart from football, Chika also participates in athletics. To put his athleticism into context, in a track competition last year he took first place in the 100-meter sprint, long jump and triple jump. As a sophomore, Ebunoha ran the 40th fastest time on the Marana varsity team with a time of 4.59. He also recorded a vertical leap of 43 inches.
According to the same coach, however, his ability to connect with teammates and lead in the locker room is even more impressive than his athleticism.
Ebunoha has tremendous upside and versatility that BYU can develop once they get to Provo. For example, he played safety, linebacker and cornerback last season.
On her favorite part of her official visit to BYU, Ebunoha said “the way everyone followed me. I felt like part of the family every moment I was there.”
