Ava Matthews, a sophomore at Seminole High School, has spent the past two summers playing with the Windermere Wildfire softball team. Matthews pitched 18 innings on May 28-29 with a 0.00 ERA. The team played five games against Miami Lady Canes Orange, Florida Select Davis, Lady Bombers – Ries, Miami Lady Canes Green and Clearwater Bullets. Matthews is already receiving emails from various colleges regarding summer camps they are offering, asking if she would be interested in attending.

When did you start playing with the Windermere Wildfire?
My old team was falling apart, so I tried for them before last summer. So I played for them last summer and this summer.

How long have you been playing softball?
Since I was 9 years old.

How did you come to softball?
Because my brother, Ayden Matthews, plays baseball.

Why softball, among all other sports?
My friends also played softball, so I just wanted to try that sport.

What do you like most about softball?
It’s good to do (good). It’s good when people congratulate you after (a game), laugh with my teammates and have fun before and after (a game), and I love my coaches.

Do you like practices?
Yes. We have practices on Wednesdays, and it’s a lot of fun. But we work a lot; it’s not just about playing. These are good practices.

What do you like most about being part of your team?
The competition, we have a very good team so it’s fun to play. (Also), the defense behind me – it’s fun to play with them, because I trust them, and I know if I give up a hit, I know they can back me up.

What do you like most about being a pitcher?
I like to make good hitters look like good hitters. Like, take on the best hitters and be better. I like to compete against one person, like head-to-head – it’s just about me and her.

How do you think being a pitcher makes you see the game differently?
(In) pitching, you have to think about each pitch. Where you’re going to throw the ball and how you’re going to throw it, because how you throw is how the game is going to play out.

Favorite class in school so far?
Probably history is interesting to learn.

Who are your favorite musical artists?
I listen to Kodak Black and A Boogie Wit A Hoodie.

Cold or hot weather?
Hot, because in the cold I can’t feel my fingers and I can’t pitch (well).

Coffee or tea?
Coffee. I drink iced coffee or iced coffee. (Also) Starbucks’ pink drink.

What is your favorite party ?
Christmas, because we have a lot of free time and a lot of family comes (to visit us).

Favorite movie?
“Shut up.” It’s a horror movie and it’s (based) in the woods. I like horror movies; they are fun to watch when you are watching with your friends and they are scared.

What TV series are you watching at the moment?
“Criminal minds.” I like that they always find out the criminal; they always finish the case before the end of the episode.

Favorite hobby?
Soft ball. Always softball.

What is your favorite dessert?
Chocolate ice cream.

What’s your favorite dish?
Chicken nuggets.

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?
I’m thinking of flying, because I could get to places faster. I do not have a car; I’m too young to have a car.

What do you prefer in summer?
To go to the beach. I like to walk around, go to the shops and buy ice cream.

Best vacation spot you’ve ever visited?
The Bahamas. I went to this hotel and it was on the beach. I love piña coladas (blank).

Top three things on your bucket list?
I want to go to Hawaii, I want to go skydiving and play college softball.

What was your favorite cartoon to watch when you were a kid?
Peppa Pig.
