DOMINIC Casey was appointed on RTÉ Sports Director of the Year 2021.
It is a fair reward for the man from Aughadown whose incredible work as Rowing Ireland’s lightweight coach reaped rich rewards last year.
Since Dominic was recruited by Rowing Ireland, the success of Irish light rowing has reached a new level, and it happened again in 2021.
Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy dominated the men’s lightweight doubles world by winning Ireland’s first-ever Olympic gold in rowing, while also setting a world best time at the Tokyo Games. Paul and Fintan also won gold in Europe and World Cup II.
Dominic is also the coach of the Irish women’s lightweight doubles – his daughter Aoife and Margaret Cremen of Rochestown – which finished second in the B final at the Olympics and a brilliant eight overall. Additionally, Lydia Heaphy of Leap won her first senior international medal after placing second in the women’s lightweight single scull at the World Rowing Cup II in Lucerne in May.
Dominic, the mastermind behind the Skibbereen Rowing Club journey from a rural country club to the country’s best, was previously named World Rowing Coach of the Year in 2018.
