Six months after the last round of testing, the Beijing Ice Cube rink, the site to host curling competitions for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, is once again complete.

After extensive testing, the ice experts have finally achieved an ice surface quality that they deem appropriate for the next Winter Games. The entire system, the supporting structures, the cooling pipes and the insulation layer, has been constantly improving since 2017.

“We have tried different types of ice to make the ice the way we want it to be,” said Hans Wuthrich, deputy chief ice technician for Ice Cube.

Hans and his team tested different sections of the ice surface at different temperatures and different sizes of pebbles.

“We did it a couple of times to make sure we had enough curvature in the ice and enough speed,” he said.

After eliminating water quality, air conditioning, lighting and local temperature issues, the site was eventually transformed from the National Aquatics Center, known as the Water Cube during the 2008 Summer Games, in Ice Cube, as it will be known for the winter. Olympic Games.

The Ice Cube is currently being tested as it hosts the World Wheelchair Curling Championship. Officials will gather feedback on the ice surface performance and make any final adjustments ahead of the February Winter Olympics.
