Garrison Smith wins the Bayou City Classic; Aggies finishes 10th.

CONROE, Texas – Garrison Smith won the first championship of his college career at the Bayou City Classic on Tuesday afternoon. Smith, a junior from Mansfield, Texas, shot a 71 (-1) on the final day to clinch a share of the championship.

As a team, the Aggies finished in 10th place overall against the Texas stacked field. In the final round, NM State missed its tournament-best score by one stroke in Tuesday’s round.

Next week, the Aggies will have their final tune-up before the WAC Championships at the Cougar Classic, hosted by Brigham Young University. The two-day event kicks off Friday, April 22 in Provo, Utah.

Third round

  • Garrison Smith picked up its first collegiate victory after finishing with a 213 (-3) over 36 holes. Sharing the title with Florida Atlantic’s Alex Maguire, Smith fell on the second hole of a playoff but retained his co-champion title.
  • Smith birdied on four consecutive holes between holes two and five to help pace his final round.
  • Aidan Thomas birdied four times to finish the first nine at 33 (-3).
  • Scott Rescigno finished the front nine at 36 par before finishing at one on the day.
  • Smith became the second Aggie to win an individual title this season after Thomas won the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, hosted by New Mexico.
