Andy Murray took to social media to launch a search for his lost wedding ring after his tennis shoes were stolen in California with his ring attached to them.
In a video posted to his Instagram page Wednesday night, Murray explained how he managed to lose his tennis shoes and wedding ring under unusual circumstances. Murray is currently preparing for his first round match against Adrian Mannarino at the BNP Paribas Indian Wells Open, where he is a two-time champion but making his first appearance since 2017.
Murray says he trained in the 38-39C heat when his shoes got “wet, sweaty and smelly,” so he decided to air them out when he got back to the hotel. Since he doesn’t have a balcony and didn’t want to “stink the room,” he opted for the unorthodox solution of leaving his tennis shoes under his car to dry overnight.
“When I got back to the car in the morning, the shoes were gone,” he said. “My tennis shoes for the tournament had been stolen, so I had to go to a local professional store and buy different shoes than I usually wear – a different brand and everything – which is not. the end of the world but obviously not ideal. “
Murray, who has been married to Kim Sears since 2015, normally weaves his wedding ring into her laces and this is visible during games, but he didn’t realize the implications of losing that pair of shoes until some time later: “So as I was getting ready for my practice, my physiotherapist told me “where’s your wedding ring?” and I said to myself, “Oh no.” I tie my wedding ring to my tennis shoes when I play because I can’t playing with it, so yes, my wedding ring was also stolen, ”he said.
In his Instagram caption, Murray admitted that he was “an idiot”, that leaving his shoes under his car overnight was “a terrible idea” in hindsight and he speculated on a possible reward for his return. Ring. “Needless to say, I’m in the wrong books at home so I want to try and find it,” he said. “If anyone can share this or have an idea of where it is, that would be very helpful so I can try to get it back.”
Equipped with his new shoes, Murray will face Mannarino in Friday night’s session at Indian Wells. Emma Raducanu will co-headline Murray as she plays her first game since winning the US Open. She will play against Aliaksandra Sasnovich from Belarus.
Despite competing with a metal hip at 34, in recent events Murray’s sweaty shoes have arguably been his biggest obstacle. At the US Open Murray led third-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas by a set and had scored the starting point in the tie-break and he was playing his best tennis in four years when his shoes got soaked in sweat. He lost grip and the crucial second set, and he spent the break criticizing his team for their lack of preparation. He ultimately lost in close five sets.
Murray subsequently said he had never had a problem on the court with tennis shoes in his life. “The shoes got so wet that at the end of the set I was basically slipping and losing my balance. That’s why I had to change after the set. And was it good. I guess something I need to learn from and in the future is to make sure that doesn’t happen again, ”he said.
Many tennis players travel with several pairs of tennis shoes precisely because shoe problems are always possible. On his next trip, Murray may well do the same.
