Jordan Burroughs (Philadelphia, PA/Pennsylvania RTC/Sunkist Kids) was selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on September 22, 2022.

At the 2022 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, Burroughs set the American record for world and Olympic gold medals with seven, including six world golds and one Olympic gold in 2012. He edged out John Smith, who won two Olympic gold medals and four world titles, and Adeline Gray, who won six world gold medals.

Competing at 79kg, Burroughs opened her tournament with three straight technical victories over opponents from Turkmenistan, North Macedonia and Kyrgyzstan. In the semi-finals, he won a decisive match 9-2 against Bulgarian Ali Umarpashaev. For the crown, Burroughs met Iranian Mohammad Nokhodilarimi in a rematch of the 2021 World Finals. The American used a crucial second-half takedown for an eventual 4-2 victory.

With seven gold medals (’11, ’12, ’13, ’15, ’17, ’21, ’22) and three bronze medals (’14, ’18, ’19), Burroughs now has 10 world medals and Olympics.

Each week, USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based on their wrestling performance for that week. The selection committee will consider all levels of wrestling, from youth programs to senior level.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor, please send the athlete’s name, wrestling schedule, weekly accomplishments, and career honors to USA Wrestling Communications and Social Media Manager Taylor Gregorio at [email protected].
