SPRING, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University men’s golf team won the Colin Montgomerie Invitational while SLU’s Michael Landry won the individual championship on Tuesday at Augusta Pine Golf Club in Spring, Texas.
The Lions blew the field shooting +4 for the tournament, 13 shots ahead of second place Gonzaga (+17), as all five Southeastern players finished in the top 25.
Landry, a sophomore, was tremendous as he shot -6 (210) for the tournament, shooting a 70 (-2) in all three rounds. In Tuesday’s final round, he finished with four birdies and two bogeys to win the individual title by three strokes over Gonzaga’s Charlie Magruder (-3). Landry had 13 birdies and just seven bogeys for the 54-hole tournament en route to the championship in his second tournament with SLU.
“He’s been so consistent throughout the tournament,” said SLU’s head golf coach. Jake Narro. “When you have a guy who plays that well on the team, it helps the whole team break down their sales. But just a brilliant performance from Michael for the 54 holes.”
Cameron Mobley had a great performance and he won fifth place. The Brandon, Mississippi native shot even for the tournament with a first-round 72, second-round 74 and last-round 72.
SLU Charlie Forster placed 14and turning at +7 while Logan Kuhn tied for 20and at +9. Grayson Glorioso wasn’t far behind as he finished tied for 24and (+10).
Southeastern shot -5 for the final round led by Forster (-3) while Mobley and Landry both shot -2 on Tuesday. Kuehn finished the last 18 holes shooting 74 (+2).
“Everyone had to contribute for us to win,” Narro said. “But to win that much, everyone had to play really well. So even if someone had a bad round, then they had two good rounds. I mean when you shoot five under par as a team in the final round, that means everything.”
Next, Southeastern will look to continue its hot spring start when it competes in the Big Texan Invitational in Kerrville, Texas, hosted by UT Rio Grande Valley on Monday, March 21.
