Luther’s baseball team to play on the “Field of Dreams” – Luther College Chips

After a late Friday practice, Luther’s head baseball coach Brian Nikkel called the team into the Regents Center turf room for a meeting.

“Everyone was like, ‘it’s Friday, I want to go home,’ so we all walked into the turf room together, and [Nikkel] was always pestering guys like ‘no phones, no phones’ and all of a sudden there’s a whisper among the guys about all that it could be, ”said Patrick Fontaine (’25) . “He projected a video on the screen. We knew about this hype video because the guys had to go and record it, but we didn’t know what it was for. All of a sudden the ‘Field of Dreams’ pops up, and it’s gone crazy in there. “

On October 1, the team learned that Luther’s baseball would play in the first-ever college game at the “Field of Dreams” movie site in Dyersville, IA. The game, which takes place on September 16, 2022, will see the Norse face the Chargers of Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, IA. Briar Cliff got this opportunity and invited Luther to be their opponent in the match. As the match takes place in the fall semester of 2022, all current Luther seniors have had the option of choosing to return and play for Luther during the “Field of Dreams” match.

Luther baseball player Sam Eng (’24) has said the scheduled game against the Chargers at Field of Dreams is now a major event for the team.

“We want to be really good [at the “Field of Dreams”], and in order to do that, we have to show up every day and work our butt, ”Eng said. “[The game] is a reward, but also a motivation to keep improving.

It won’t be the first time that baseball has been played on the famous field. In a Major League Baseball (MLB) regular season game last August, the Chicago White Sox defeated the New York Yankees 9-8 via a home run in the ninth inning. A future MLB game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs is scheduled for 2022.

The game between the White Sox and the Yankees took place in a stadium built near the site as the original pitch could not be adapted to MLB playing standards, but when the Norse and Chargers enter in the field, they will play on the legitimate historical film. to place.

Playing on the ‘Field of Dreams’ is something our players probably never thought they would have the chance to do, ”Nikkel said in a statement released by the Luther Athletics Department. “As they run around this iconic field and feel their spikes sink into the dirt, this game will no doubt stir up emotions and bring them back to why they play baseball, a sport that has created so many opportunities. for all of us.”

The film “Field of Dreams” was released in 1989 and starred Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella, a farmer from Iowan who builds a baseball field in his cornfield despite the financial hardship it can cause him. . It became an Oscar nominee in 1990 for Best Picture, and in 2017 was added to the United States National Film Register by the Library of Congress for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance. The film is currently in the process of being remade into a television series, which will be written by Michael Schur and aired on Peacock.

“Field of Dreams” presents important themes of family relationships, especially those between fathers and sons. The film enjoyed lasting popularity and proved to be influential for many Nordic actors, such as Peyton Lindmark (’24).

“I grew up watching the movie a lot when I was a kid, and everyone knows that scene where [Kinsella and his dad] playing wrestling on the field is a pretty emotional part of the movie, ”said Lindmark. “Everyone has this connection to it, just [because of] their father or grandfather or whoever taught them the game.

While anticipation is high within the team, the Luther community will have to wait until fall 2022 to see the historic game. Ticket availability for the match will be announced at a later date.
