A Lincoln man is facing a list of charges after a series of events that unfolded around 8.30am Thursday morning.
LPD was called to Super C at 32nd and Sheridan Blvd. on a report that a man with a long ponytail arrived in a white SUV and left without paying $78.15 in fuel. Officers were then contacted by a member of the Fugitive Task Force who was conducting surveillance in the 200 block of S 28th Street and saw the SUV parked in front of a house with a person still inside.
The task force member was able to determine that the 2019 Toyota Highlander was reported stolen on July 29 from the 600 block of Mesaverde Drive and was valued at $35,000.
Officers responded to residents of S 29th Street and established a perimeter. When the task force approached the SUV to make contact with the person inside, it took off across the back yard, through a wooden fence, and struck an LPD cruiser parked in the driveway. The officer was not inside the cruiser at the time.
The SUV crossed the driveway and eventually collided with another vehicle near 27th and J. The driver then fled. Officers arrested 23-year-old Gabriel Olivas near 25th and H. He matched the driver’s description and was out of breath.
Olivas was arrested and cited for theft while receiving $5,000 or more, operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, obstructing a police officer, criminal mischief, willful reckless driving, and driving while impaired.
Damage to the cruiser is estimated at $5,000. No further damage estimates are available as reports are being finalized.
