MANKATO — Martin County West Maverick golfers Hunter Schmidt and Mitchell Weber each earned individual berths in the Class A state tournament.

Schmidt shot an 18-hole round of 73 to take first-place honours, while Weber shot an 80 to share third-place accolades in the Section 2 Boys’ Golf Tournament at North Links Golf Course in Mankato on Monday.

Next for Schmidt and Weber is the two-day state tournament on Tuesday, June 14 and Wednesday, June 15 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.

Schmidt was the sectional medalist, posting a two-day total of 76-73-149, while Weber recorded a 77-80-157 to tie for third place overall with United South’s Kadyn Neubauer Central.

Schmidt finished his round with four birdies (holes 9, 10, 13 and 14) and 10 pars (holes 1-5, 8, 12, 15-17) for his 1-over par 73. Weber had pars on 11 holes – Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, 12 and 14-17.

Madelia’s Noah Tierney tied for 19th, shooting 93-98–191, making par on the 12th and 17th holes.

Logan Thell of Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton was the runner-up in the section with a two-day total of 156.

USC edged out JWP to win the State team‘s automatic bid, beating the runner-up by a stroke, 682-683. Sleepy Eye United took third place with 711 and Martin County West finished fourth with 740.

“It was a good day on the course and a great day to play,” said Martin County West head coach Jordan Neduzak. “We would have liked to shoot lower scores, but at least we avoided, for the most part, stringing together the wrong holes. It was my first year as head coach and I inherited a good group.

Carter Lyon was the Mavericks’ No. 3 scorer posting a 100-114–214 and was followed by Evan Roben, who shot 107-124–231 and Tate Leiding at 125-113–238. Lyon’s highlight was a par on the 12th hole.

Kamden Domeier played Day 1 for Martin County West but was ill and did not play in Monday’s final round.
