Mission Able event gives people with disabilities the chance to have fun painting fences

QUINCY (WGEM) – National Tom Sawyer Days kicked off in Hannibal on Saturday.

Hannibal Jaycee’s Mission Able Fence Painting event was held at Hannibal Tanyard Gardens.

The special event allowed people, young and old, with disabilities to participate in a closing paint race.

Competitors were divided into waves of three. Individuals started at the starting line and then raced to three individual fence panels. Each fence panel was paired with a large brush and a bucket of paint that each person worked to cover their entire panel first.

This was only the second appearance of the events and will continue in the following years.

The objective of the event was to provide a day of equal opportunities for people with special needs and people with disabilities. Organizers said they picked a day when nothing else was going on to allow them time to make the event special.

Mission Able president Emma Dooley said that after working with people with special needs for more than 20 years, they hold a special place in her heart.

“We just want them, children and adults with disabilities, to be able to be equals,” Dooley said.

National Tom Sawyer Days events will continue until July 4th. Click on here for a list of Tom Sawyer Days events.
