Palmerton continues to work out details for a field on the west end that will eventually be converted into a dog park.

Borough Director Donna McGarry said at Thursday’s borough council meeting that she met with three fencing contractors.

“I’m waiting for the third (entrepreneur),” McGarry said. “The first thing we’re looking at is fencing and locking him up.”

Last month, the council agreed to repurpose West End Recreation Association land as a dog park.

The field is located along J Lane above portions of the 800 and 900 blocks of Edgemont Avenue.

Councilor Andrew Hollywood said the council saw it as an opportunity to reallocate the land and added that there was a children’s play area there.

He also said that at that time there was a drainage system there, but some maintenance was needed.

Hollywood said there would also be a two-door system, which is common for most dog parks.

He said the plan was to fund the work with grants and private funds, in the hope that a hobby group would eventually be formed.

McGarry said the borough plans to seek funding for work to complete the dog park.

There is no official name for the park.
