Some stores had collection boxes to raise funds and awareness of Special Olympics.

Proceeds are used to support 3,400 athletes statewide to compete in the games.

“So we know if we should put a price tag or charge them so few of our athletes can participate,” said Tracey Bender, director of development for Special Olympics Hawaii. “So not all of our athletes can do that. So we are happy to be able to do it for them.

Some stores also offered Star Wars-themed specials and other offers to benefit Special Olympics.

“We have about 14 tenants who have gone above and beyond and are promoting,” Bender added. “For example, if you’re at Kam Bakery and you buy a dozen donuts, they’ll donate $1 to Special Olympics for every dozen you buy.”
