The four seeds in the Maui Interscholastic League Individual Tennis Tournament combined to drop just 13 games in Friday’s semifinals at the Lahaina Civic Center.
Top seeds Nikki Fernando of Seabury Hall (girls) and Justin Powell of Baldwin (boys) have lost just four games apiece in three matches en route to decisive places in today’s final.
In the women’s singles final, Fernando – the MIL finalist as a rookie in 2019 – will face Spartans teammate Alexa de Crinis, who knocked out second seed Paula Esteve Rodriguez of King Kekaulike 6-1, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.
The boys’ final will see Powell face third seed Manoli Placourakis of Seabury Hall – Placourakis beat No. 2 Chris Muller of Lahainaluna 6-2, 6-0 in the semi-final.
The doubles finals will be between the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds.
The Bears’ top-seeded boy pair of Ean Allencastre-Higuchi and Kai Matsui – who saw their first action of the tournament on Friday after receiving byes on Day 1 – reached the final with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Jaxon of Kamehameha Maui and Jayden Pahukula, the No. 3 seed. They will face Indi Petrone and Alex Ferayorni of Kihei Charter in the final.
The women’s doubles final features top seeds Jordyn Luna and Hie Luna Beamer of Maui High – the pair have lost just three games in three matches so far – against Kamehameha Maui’s Beryl Lau and Keakealani Cashman.
