The men return to action on Saturday at the Austin College Invitational


Sherman, TX- The centennial men’s and women’s swim teams will compete in the Austin College Invitational against host ‘Roos on Saturday at the Hannah Natatorium.

Centenary were due to host Millsaps last Saturday, but the meeting has been postponed, so it will be the first action for Maroon and White of the new year and the first since a home meeting against Hendrix on November 13.

The ladies lost a close battle, 140-134, while the gentlemen lost a 186-81 decision. The meeting was Centenary’s second straight at home after their home opener Oct. 30 against McMurry University. Centenary recorded an impressive 11 individual wins on Saturday and a team victory as the Gents won the men’s medley relay in a time of 1:47.74.

Three Gents picked up wins over Hendrix as senior Mitchell Lulich (New Orleans, La.) won the 100 breaststroke swimming a time of 1:05.39, second Antonio “Tony” Barbee (Plaquemine, La. ) swam a time of 56.69 to win the 100 butterfly and senior Tripp Montgomery (New Iberia, Louisiana) won the 50 breaststroke with a time of 29.88. Those same three teamed up with freshman Cash Coats (Andrews, Texas) to take the win in the 200m medley relay.

On the men’s side, Lulich was third in the 200 freestyle (1:58.18), Coats was third in the 50 breaststroke (31.61), rookie Nathaniel Batiste Jr. (Vacherie, Louisiana) was fifth in the 50 breaststroke (32.99) , and runner-up Jules Reny (Lille, France) was fourth in the 500m freestyle (5:54.56), which was a season best time in the event and fifth in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2 : 07.54. Sophomore Aiden Peterkin (Zachary, Louisiana) was fourth in the 50 backstroke (32.36) and sixth in the 50 butterfly (29.22).

Barbee was named SCAC Male Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 17 for the first time in his career after his impressive all-around performance against Hendrix. He swam the season best time of 56.69 to win the 100m butterfly and also finished third in the 50m butterfly (25.82) and fourth in the 100m freestyle (53.47). Barbee was also a member of a pair of relay teams that finished first and second. He teamed with three others to win the 200 medley relay (1:47.74) and was part of a team that earned a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.09).
