“At first the rain was just a drizzle so it wasn’t that difficult, we were doing well but once we got past 1.80m and the jumps higher, the rain got worse and the conditions were difficult. Above all, the conditions were deteriorating for me because my socks got wet, which made take off difficult. That’s why I struggled with the upper jumps, ”said Mariyappan Thangavelu at a virtual press conference hosted by Eurosport.

Thangavelu had not been the flag bearer for the opening ceremony as he had been identified as being in close contact with someone infected with COVID-19.

Speaking of missing the opening ceremony, Thangavelu said: “If conditions were better I would have crossed the 1.90m mark, missing to be the flag bearer due to close contact with COVID- 19 was upsetting but I wanted to win the medal for the country. I trained separately due to the isolation rules before the event. “

Mariyappan Thangavelu and Sharad Kumar won silver and bronze respectively in the men’s high jump final at Tokyo National Stadium on Tuesday. They were both from the Sport Class T42.
