VP Kamala Harris to Paris for Fence Repair Trip between US and France | World news

PARIS (AP) – US Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday launched a four-day visit to Paris and a charm offensive aimed at strengthening relations with France, the United States’ oldest ally.

Washington’s relations with Paris hit an all-time low this year after a U.S.-British submarine deal with Australia thwarted a French contract to sell submarines to the Australian Navy. Late last month, President Joe Biden told French President Emmanuel Macron that the United States had been “awkward” in handling the issue.

Harris began his journey by meeting American and French scientists working on COVID-19 preparedness at the Institut Pasteur in Paris.

She said the visit underscored the shared determination to address global challenges, in particular to end the coronavirus pandemic.

“Some of the most important scientific discoveries on everything from rabies to HIV-AIDS, breast cancer, mRNA and what we’re doing around vaccines and pandemics, have taken place here in collaboration with French scientists, American scientists, scientists from all over the world. world comes together, ”said Harris, a former senator from California.

She also mentioned the personal symbolism of the institute: Her late mother Shyamala Gopalan, who was a scientist, conducted breast cancer research with scientists at the institute in the 1980s.

Harris is due to sit with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace on Wednesday for talks which should focus on ways the two countries can better coordinate their efforts in the Indo-Pacific.

Harris and Macron are also expected to discuss global health, space and other issues. Harris is expected to deliver a speech Thursday at the annual Paris Peace Forum and attend the Paris Libya Conference on Friday.
