Westfield Athlete Making a “Racket” With His Golfer Ability • Current Edition

Westfield High School sophomore golfer Addi Kooi has only played competitive golf for three years, but is growing fast.

“She’s had an amazing season,” Shamrocks women’s golf coach Josh Bryant said. “His game flourishes before our eyes. She plays tennis in the Westfield team. We like to have multi-sport athletes. She’s a competitor.

Kooi finished tied for fourth with a total of 154 in the IHSAA State Finals at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. She shot 79 in the first round on September 30 and 75 in the last round on October 1.

Kooi struggled with windy conditions in round two.

“The front nine was a challenge. We had a few hits that didn’t go our way,” Kooi said. “You have to work for every shot here, and being patient has really helped.”

Kooi said she learned a few things from the first round, when it comes to where to place the ball.

“I definitely could have shot lower (than 75),” Kooi said. “I made a few mistakes.”

Bryant said she handled adversity very well in the national finals.

Kooi said she has improved the most in her short game.

“It saved me a lot of kicking up and down,” Kooi said.

Kooi’s teammate, junior Samantha Brown, was one stroke behind with a 78-77 for a total of 155. Westfield finished seventh as a team.

“(Brown) pushes me so much,” Kooi said. “It’s the first time I beat her. She made me a better player to see how she works and (how) she hits the ball. She’s a phenomenal player. It definitely impacted my game and brought me to this level.

Brown, who is committed to playing for Purdue University’s women’s golf team, and Kooi have both earned honors from the Indiana State Golf Coaches Association.

“Sam was the leading scorer in any state,” Bryant said. “The crazy thing about Sam is that she was 14 under for the season aggregate.”

Kooi has been playing tennis since she was little. She played No. 3 varsity singles for the Shamrocks as a rookie last season.

“I’m leaning more towards trying to play golf in college,” she said. “But I love tennis and I’ll be playing all through high school. I think I’m more drawn to golf, and it’s more my passion now.

Kooi’s mother, Keri Grossman, played college tennis at Southern Illinois University and her father, Jeff Kooi, played basketball at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa.

“My dad started playing golf when he was young and he taught us all,” Kooi said.
