After completion of the site, the wind-themed artwork will become part of the collection of the Espoo Museum of Modern Art, and some will be hung in the halls of residential buildings.
The fence of the Tuultenristi construction site in the center of Tapiola is surrounded by works of art by illustrator Ilona Partanen which depict different winds.
The Site Fence Art Project is a collaborative project between YIT and EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art. The goal is to use visual art to brighten up the day and bring art to the newly built area and its people.
The Tuultenristi project near the Tapiola metro station and bus terminal includes two 12-storey and one nine-storey residential buildings, a five-storey office building as well as parking for residential buildings. The names of the residential buildings in Tuultenristi are Länsituuli, Etelätuuli and Itätuuli. Construction of the first residential project for Tuultenristi, Asunto Oy Espoon Itätuuli, began this spring.
The apartments in buildings with amazing architecture are equipped with high quality materials. The apartments have large windows, sliding glass doors leading to glazed balconies, and floor heating and air conditioning.
In total, the new buildings will invite more than 400 new residents to the center of Tapiola.
âThe Tuultenristi block is located in the center of Tapiola, and the construction site will be there for a long time, so we wanted to have something interesting and pleasant on the fences of the site to delight residents and passers-by,â explains Esa Turkka, vice president of YIT.
In addition to the new residential block, a total of 4,200 m² of office and service space will be completed in Tuultenristi. Tuultenristi’s offices and service spaces follow the same language as the apartments, providing high-quality, bright and attractive spaces for businesses located in the region. The premises offer a wide and comfortable view over Merituulentori and Tuuliniitty to Hakalehto. The Tuultenristi office and service building will be completed in the second construction phase in 2023.
The starting point of Ilona Partanen’s work was to find a unique character for each wind and to emphasize it through visual means. The artwork combines winds and vortices with different folk tales and animal figures, as well as everyday objects, such as hats, flags and boats. The proximity to the sea affected visual art. The artwork is printed on aluminum and acrylic plates that are attached to the site’s painted fence.
Ilona Partanen works mainly as an illustrator and graphic designer, but she is also used to creating art for public spaces. His works are characterized by a bold use of color, pictorial qualities and organic forms. Examples of her public works can be seen, for example, at Myyrmäki station, where she collaborated with the Multicolored Dreams collective. She is also a member of the G-REX street art club in Grafia.
Elements of Partanen’s work will be included in the EMMA collection and may be exhibited later in the public spaces of Espoo. The work is replicable in nature, which means that new versions can be made of its elements, if necessary.
EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art is located in Tapiola, Espoo, at the WeeGee exhibition center. In addition to the museum exhibits, EMMA art can be found around the town of Espoo. A significant part of the works in the EMMA collection is permanently accessible to all inhabitants of the Espoo urban landscape, as outdoor monuments or in schools, hospitals, daycares, assisted living facilities and indoor swimming pools. EMMA also carries out more extensive public art projects in the city.
